The Tuol Sleng secondary school is hidden behind a fence in a quite district of the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh. It has been empty for over 40 years, a silent witness to the agony of a nation. Thousands of men, women and children were tortured in it’s classrooms, they were then driven to the outskirts of the city and executed.

Nearly 2 million people died in the Killing Fields of Cambodia, a quarter of the countries population lost in less than four years. One man above all was responsible for this secret genocide, he used hunger and terror to control not just what his people did and said but what they wore, where they lived, even who they loved, his name was Pol Pot.

Cambodia at the time was closed to the world and no true record was filmed of his new society but drawing on his words and the testimony of those who knew him well, this is the story of Pol Pots journey to the Killing Fields.
