Tasmania is a secluded island located off the south coast of Australia, it is know for it’s large, rugged wilderness but towards the west of the island there is an ominous red river which divides the small mining town of Queenstown.
This red river is the result of water run-off from a closed mine, the water itself is extremely acidic which dissolves much of what lies in its way, rendering the surrounding land unusable.
This level of pollution is an ever-present reminder of the town’s history of environmental and industrial disaster.
Where the River Runs Red takes us inside what once was a thriving community but has since been crippled, we see how they struggle to come to terms with a future that is less reliant on a mining economy.
